Windham Area Recreation Foundation

Dedicated to establishing the Windham region as a preeminent four season destination and bettering the lives of its residents and visitors through the enhancement of trail-based recreation opportunities.

The Windham Area Recreation Foundation (WARF) is a 501c3, all volunteer organization working to enhance trail-based recreation in the Windham, NY area.

Our Vision

Windham is the four-season trail-based recreation capital of the Northeast and is home to:

  • extensive networks of mountain bike trails that provide memorable, all-day adventures;

  • a family friendly bike park; and

  • a multi-use trail connecting every business, residence and activity center.

Our Mission

The Windham Area Recreation Foundation (WARF) is dedicated to establishing the Windham region as a preeminent four season destination and bettering the lives of its residents and visitors through the enhancement of trail-based recreation opportunities.

History

WARF was established to organize and run a UCI Mountain Bike World Cup race in Windham. The UCI (International Cycling Union) is cycling's premiere governing body, and its Mountain Bike World Cup series is the preeminent race in mountain biking. The event brings tens of thousands of competitors and spectators to Greene County each year, providing a boon to the area's economy. Windham hosted the event from 2010-2012, 2014 - 2015 and it will be returning in the summer of 2019.

The foundation readjusted and expanded its goals as an organization after Hurricane Irene devastated the Windham area in the summer of 2011. WARF raised over $200,000 in the aftermath of Irene and devised a system to fairly and efficiently distribute the funds to businesses and individuals in need. WARF's efforts were crucial to restoring and healing Windham after the flood.

The Windham Trail Vision

WARF's efforts to improve the community continue today with its trail vision. The Windham Trail Vision is WARF's master plan for trail-based recreation in Windham. It consists of four major components, the Windham Path, the Elm Ridge trail system, the Mount Hayden trail system and the Windham Mountain Bike Park. Upon completion, these components will combine to enhance Windham's outdoor recreational opportunities and make it the premier east coast destination for trail-based recreation.
